The aluminum WinGuard impact series uses heavy-duty constant-force balances rated for the additional sash weight of laminated glass, while the WinGuard Vinyl series runs on a different balance shoe and cam system. The Preferred non-impact line uses lighter-duty components that are not interchangeable. Check the etched mark in the glass corner or the label on the frame edge for the series name and NFRC code. The date of manufacture matters too: PGT changed its vinyl interlock design in 2019, so a 2017 WinGuard Vinyl sash won’t seat correctly in a 2021 frame without adapter hardware.

Signs Your PGT Window Replacement Is Failing

• The sash drops or won’t stay open. This is almost always a failed balance spring. In Pinecrest’s salt-air environment, we see balance corrosion accelerate after year six, particularly on east-facing elevations where morning salt mist settles before the sun burns it off.
• Visible moisture or fog between glass panes. The insulated glass unit (IGU) seal has failed. Once desiccant saturation occurs, the glass pack must be replaced; defogging sprays are temporary and void any remaining warranty.
• Lock won’t engage or handle spins freely. The multipoint lock mechanism or keeper has worn or shifted. On PGT vinyl units, thermal expansion between frame and sash can throw off alignment by 1/8 inch, which is enough to prevent latching.
• Frame corners show separation or caulk failure. This indicates either original installation deficiency or structural settling. In Pinecrest’s coral-rock substrate, we see this most often in homes built during the 2004-2007 boom when window installation was rushed ahead of stucco curing.
• Air infiltration around operable sash even when closed. Weatherstrip compression set or missing pile fin. The fin height on PGT vinyl units is 0.270 inch on most series; anything below 0.180 inch after compression is below functional threshold.

An owner can verify the series label, photograph the failure, and confirm whether the window is under PGT’s product warranty - which covers glass seal failure for 10 years from manufacture and non-glass components for 10 years on most residential lines. What an owner should not attempt: removing a sash with failed balances (the sudden release of spring tension can cause laceration or drop the sash on fingers), cutting stucco to access a nail fin, or handling laminated impact glass without proper edge support. The glass alone in a WinGuard unit weighs 8-12 pounds per square foot.
