An owner can safely check three things: verify the model number from the label, confirm the symptom happens on both the left and right sides of a double unit (which points to frame settlement rather than part failure), and clear weep holes with a piece of wire. Do not attempt to remove an impact-rated sash without proper support; the laminated glass assembly weighs 6 to 8 pounds per square foot and the balance is under spring tension that releases unpredictably.

Where DIY goes wrong: forcing a stuck sash bends the balance shoe track, misaligning every future operation.
